Week 25

Dear parents and students,
We have come to the end of our first full week in a while, and we have managed to pack a great amount of work and activities into the past five days.
We began on Monday with our R&W Workshop Poetry Slam. Each student presented a poem, which had been written, revised, and rehearsed over the past week. The results were very impressive. Some of us who are not so fond of speaking before the class are overcoming our fears, while others are improving skills and becoming entertaining performers. Special mention goes to Julia, who not only wrote and practised her poem despite missing an entire week of class, but was also able to recite the entire poem from heart.
Monday morning was also the first lesson dedicated to reading Alice in Wonderland. We have read three and a half chapters so far, and we are still somewhat divided over how we feel about this classic children’s novel. We have had some excellent discussions about the story, characters, and themes, and we have also produced some high-quality journal entries based on our responses to the book. We will continue with Alice next week.
In Maths, we have been learning how to calculate the perimeters and areas of various polygons. We are spending time learning the formulas to apply to each type of shape, with emphasis on understanding how the formula works. Some extra help to reinforce these principles has been included in the homework post below. The Topic 14 test will take place next Thursday.
We were lucky with the weather on Wednesday, as we headed down to Taichung for our field trip to the Earthquake Museum. Our tour guide was quite impressed with our knowledge of earthquakes, and was pleased to hear the correct terminology used to describe tectonic plates, layers of the earth, fault lines and other related concepts. A slideshow of pictures from the trip was included on Wednesday’s post. You can click here to revisit the slideshow.
We have a number of exciting activities coming up in the near future. Spirit Week will be held from Monday, 16th March – Friday 20th March. Details will be provided shortly. Race Day takes place on the Wednesday during Spirit Week (18th March). All parents are welcome to attend.
The following week brings us to International Week, with presentations being held on Monday and Tuesday, 23rd-24th March. Grade 4 will be presenting New Zealand. Parents are encouraged to attend on one of these mornings and enjoy the presentations.
Spring break follows International week, from Thursday, 26th March – Sunday, 4th April.
Also coming up is the Science fair, which will take place on Thursday, 23rd April. We have already begun planning for the Science Fair. I hope that parents are able to become involved in your children’s projects. Please find within the workbook a message to parents and how you can become involved.  Below is a list of upcoming dates.
