Week 31
Dear parents and students,
This week has had a very sweet edge to it, as we
raised money for water.org through our bake sale. The bake sale was very
successful, and we have exceeded our goals for the fundraiser. Well done to
everyone involved, with particular thanks to Mrs. Dimitrov and Mrs. Takahara,
who baked delicious goodies for us every day. Thank you for your time and
generosity.
This week was also notable for the Science Fair.
Thank you to all of the parents who were able to make it. I’m sure you were all
impressed by the high standards that have been set. Thank you also for supporting your children
throughout the preparations for the Science Fair, and making time to help them
out and lend a hand.
In Maths, we have begun a new topic, dedicated to
data and graphs. We will be introduced to some new concepts, which makes a nice
change to the last few topics, which were mostly review. You can click on this link for an introduction to data and graphs if
you feel you need a little extra help.
We took a short break in our Reading Circles this
week, but we will be back into the regular routine next week, beginning with
pre-reading Sing to the Stars for
homework this weekend. The Reading Circles have been going well, with everyone
getting involved in finding deeper meaning in the stories we read. We finally
finished our Wordle project this week, in which we each found three adjectives
to describe each other student in the class. The results are on display below.
Next week, we will hold a bazaar on Wednesday
afternoon. A large component of the bazaar will be selling things donated by
HIS students. If you have anything you care to donate, please bring it to
school on Monday or Tuesday. All parents
and family are invited to visit the bazaar, which will begin just after 1:00pm
on Wednesday.

Week 30
First of all, I would like to thank all parents
for making the time to come in and see me this week. It has been very
encouraging to find that we are all on the same page in regard to the wellbeing
and the education of your children, and it is always very insightful and
helpful to gain one another’s perspectives of what is going on your children’s
lives at school and at home.
During class hours, we have had another very busy
week. We have been dedicating more time to our Reading Circles. I have been
very pleased with how honestly and accurately everyone has been able to assess
his or her own efforts and abilities. We will continue this process the week
after next, with everyone assuming a new task within each group. Next week, we
will be focusing on our Opinion essays, finishing the week with an oral
presentation of what we have written.
In Maths, we have closed yet another Topic, and
had our Topic 16 test today. Next Monday and Tuesday, we will be having a
cumulative test, and a benchmark test. The cumulative test is to see how much
we have remembered since the beginning of the year, and the benchmark test will
also give an indication of how we are faring, as well as providing a little
practice ahead of the Iowa tests, which will take place in a few weeks from
now.
As you are all well aware, the Science Fair is to
take place next Thursday, 23rd April. We have spent considerable
time in class working on our projects, but much of the work has also been
taking place at home. This weekend is the last available for working on the
presentations. Parents, please support your children by helping them with any
printing they may need to have done during the weekend. We will use Monday’s Science lesson to add
final touches to our presentations. On Wednesday, we will present to one
another in class, then Thursday is the big day! For those parents who are able
to attend on Thursday morning, I look forward to seeing you!
In addition to our busy schedule, we also enjoyed
Pottery Day on Wednesday. Pictures of the workshop have been provided in a
slideshow posted below. The finished products are expected to be available just
before Mothers’ Day.
We have also been busy raising money for our Water for Everyone fund, as
you are aware. This week’s coin donation
has been very successful. Next week, we have a bake sale, in which baked
goodies will be donated and sold. Students may buy cookies and muffins during
recess (with parents’ permission, of course!)
The following week, we will hold a bazaar on Wednesday
afternoon. More details will be given soon. Please check the posters below for
details regarding the Bake Sale and the Science Fair.
