Week 10

Dear parents and students,
It has been a short and hectic week, but it has been a productive and fun-filled one, too.
In the Reading and Writing Workshop, we spent some time reading and solving mysteries, and then we got into the spirit of Halloween by writing a very spooky journal entry. We also finished Unit 2 of English grammar; a unit checkup has been assigned for homework over the break.
We also finished another topic in Math, and held the Topic 5 test last Tuesday, allowing us an extra day to become familiar with Topic 6, which is dedicated to algebra. We were all very relieved to find that algebra isn’t quite as scary or confusing as people make out, and in fact, we have been learning algebra all along in our word problems! As Topic 6 is quite a short one, we will be having a topic test next Friday.
On Wednesday, we had our Food Web presentations in which we were treated to some very informative displays and presentations. Everyone should be very proud, as presenting in front of a group of people can be very scary! We will be finishing Chapter 6 of the Science text on Wednesday, with a Chapter Test on Thursday.
Not quite as scary as presentations were our Halloween activities. Thank you to all the parents who came along. You have seen how much work your children put into the activities, and your presence makes it all even more rewarding.
As you know, tomorrow marks the beginning of a four-day weekend for all HIS students. I hope you all enjoy the long break, and if you are tavelling, please be safe. I look forward to seeing you all again on Tuesday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Student of the Week, Week 10

Congratulations to Shin!
This week, we found that giving a presentation in front of class can be very scary. Although Shin was very nervous, he bravely gave his presentation. Not only did he present well, but his knowledge of his subject was excellent. His efforts for his Food Web presentation is one of several high quality efforts he has given over the past week.
Great work, Shin. Keep it up!

Week 9

Dear parents and students,

Everyone has been getting excited in anticipation of Halloween. We have been busy with our preparations, but we have also been getting some schoolwork done.
We finished reading Danny, the Champion of the World this week. This has been a read aloud project we have been working on over the past few weeks. As everyone has listened to me read, students have been taking notes, drawing pictures, and putting together an assortment of notes and graphics, which have accumulated to create a wall-sized book report. This large-scale model will come in very useful when we begin to write our individual book reports ahead of Literacy Week.
In Math, we are coming to the end of Topic 6, and the test will be held on Wednesday. We will take a break from standard numeration afterwards and use topic 7 to investigate algebra.
We have been busy planning our first Science presentation for this year. Over the weekend everyone will be busy organizing our Food Web presentations. Parents, I hoipe that you are able to assist with the preparations, and discuss your child’s chosen food web and ecosystem. Not only will you be offering great support, but you might learn something too!
We used our Art class this week to design and build our Spooky Fairground Attractions for Halloween. Everyone has some great ideas, and I’m very excited to see how all of the challenges turn out. I’m sure that the other grades are going to love what Grade 4 provide for them. Thank you to all of the parents who have already been helping and supporting your children with their creations. As much of the work needs to be done at home, your participation is greatly appreciated. I hope that many of you will be able to take time from your schedules to visit us on Thursday. We have the peformances beginning at 9am, and the other activities, including Grade 4’s Spooky Fairground Attractions, will take place after recess.
I hope to see you all then.

Have a wonderful weekend!
