Week 6

Dear parents and students,
As another week whizzes by, we continue to make good progress in Grade 4.

We have completed our first unit of Social Studies, and have begun a new unit in Science. In Life Science, we will be examining different ecosystems and how they function in different parts of the world. This week we observed how some of the nonliving things in our environment are important to us. Next week, we will shift our focus to the living things.

We completed Topic 3 in Math, this week, which was dedicated to multiplication. Everyone seems quite competent in our current multiplication skills, so we should all feel confident about the Topic Test that will take place on Monday.

In Reading, we have been enjoying Roald Dahl’s Danny, the Champion of the World. While reading this book, we have been reflecting on what is important in life, and who the people are in our lives that make our lives special. I look forward to reading the weekend’s journal entries about the special people in our lives.

This week, you received an invitation to sign up for Raz Kids. This is an excellent reading tool that can be used most anywhere, as it can be accessed through any home computer, as well as tablets and smart phones. The website has an Android and Apple Store app, so it is a very convenient program.

This website allows the user to access books that are appropriate to his or her reading level. I assess the level at school, and then assign books through the website. As you make progress, I will update the level and you will gain access to new and more challenging books.

There are icons below each book. The ear icon provides audio with the story. The eye icon is read only. This function also offers a recording mode, in which your voice can be recorded as you read the book.  The other icon is for the quiz. You can earn extra stars for completing the quiz.

I hope that all parents can sign up to the program, as then you will be able to track your child’s progress, and become involved in his or her reading development.

Next week is Awareness Week. We will be participating in activities throughout the week along the theme; Overcoming Bullying with Kindness. As part of the activities, remember to wear blue on Wednesday, to show your support in the prevention of bullying.

Please also remember that next Friday, 10th October, is a public holiday. Happy 10/10!
